Small House

This Small Home is a Design Masterpiece

There are some homes that instantly stop you in your tracks, and this spectacular small home in Australia is certainly one of them.

With its bold black exterior, striking shed-style form and beautifully resolved design, this 84sqm home is a wonderful example of how powerful small house design can be when every detail has been carefully considered. Inspired by tiny house living, Japanese design and Scandinavian simplicity, the home feels calm, refined and deeply practical, while still delivering a huge amount of architectural impact.

Designed by Nolene and self-built together with Steve, this home is a true labour of love. Steve, who is nearly 70, brought extraordinary craftsmanship to the project, while Nolene’s eye for colour, layout and interior design helped shape the home into a peaceful sanctuary for the next chapter of their lives.

Inside, the home is filled with clever design ideas. A soaring timber-lined ceiling gives the main living space incredible volume, while polished concrete floors, warm timber tones, black accents and soft natural textures bring together a beautiful blend of Japanese and Scandinavian design influences. The result is a small home that feels spacious, grounded and wonderfully calming.

At the heart of the home is an exceptional kitchen, designed not only to look beautiful, but to work brilliantly. With a clever hidden pantry, generous workspace and a layout that makes the kitchen the true social centre of the home, this is compact living without compromise.

Throughout the house, thoughtful details continue to unfold. There is a practical no-stairs layout, smart storage, a peaceful bedroom, a walk-in wardrobe, a resort-style ensuite and handmade finishes that give the home a strong sense of personality and care. Every element feels intentional.

The property surrounding the home is just as inspiring, with productive gardens, recycled-material outbuildings, a Japanese-inspired garden, a Kiwi cave, a Prosecco bar and more projects still underway. Together, Nolene and Steve have created not just a beautiful small house, but a whole urban oasis.

While this is not technically a tiny house, it has taken many of the best lessons from the tiny house movement and applied them to a slightly larger, long-term home. It is efficient, thoughtfully planned, beautifully crafted and perfectly suited to the way Nolene and Steve want to live.

For anyone interested in shed homes, small house design, Japanese design, Scandinavian design, tiny house inspired living, self-build homes or compact architecture, this home is packed with ideas and inspiration.

This is a home that proves great design is not about size. It is about thought, creativity, craftsmanship and creating a space that truly supports the life being lived inside it.
