Spectacular Wooden Roundhouse Takes the Classic Yurt to the Next Level
There’s something special about a round home, and hidden amongst the forests of British Columbia, Matt and Adrienne have created a beautiful
example of just how far the classic yurt concept can be taken. Looking for an affordable and sustainable family home they could largely
build themselves, the couple chose a wooden yurt kitset for their three-acre property. With help from friends and family, all 24 wall
sections were raised in a single day, with the roof following soon after.
Today, the 730 sq ft (68 m²) roundhouse is home to Matt, Adrienne and their two young boys. Inside, the soaring timber ceiling draws the eye towards a central skylight, while natural wood, clay-finished walls and a wood-burning stove give the home an incredible sense of warmth. Designing around curved walls created plenty of challenges, but the family have made clever use of the space with an open-plan kitchen and living area, two bedrooms, a bathroom, loft and a practical mudroom.
The home is also part of a much larger lifestyle. Around the property, Matt and Adrienne have created productive gardens and a collection of charming bunkies, some of which have become guest accommodation and a small vacation rental business. Most importantly, they deliberately chose to keep their home relatively compact so their family would spend more time outdoors enjoying the surrounding forest and land.
By starting with a kitset, taking on much of the construction themselves and putting in an enormous amount of hands-on work, Matt and Adrienne have created a remarkable family home at a surprisingly affordable cost. It’s a wonderful example of alternative building and a compelling look at what the humble yurt can become when transformed into a permanent, beautifully finished home.
