This Amazing Tiny House Does Everything Differently
Most tiny homes begin with a box. Elly and Charlie wanted something far more personal. Their off-grid tiny house in New South Wales, Australia, is defined by curves, warm timber and a collection of artistic details that give the home a character entirely its own. Rather than following a familiar tiny house formula, they worked with their builder to create a space that feels playful, practical and deeply connected to the way they live.
The curved roofline continues throughout the interior, shaping the ceiling, staircase and transitions between the different living areas. Carefully positioned windows bring in natural light and frame the surrounding bush, while handcrafted finishes add texture and colour throughout the home. One of the most striking examples is the kitchen splashback, created using layers of Venetian plaster, limestone and crushed copper.
The kitchen itself is unusually large for a tiny home. Cooking, food and community are central to Elly and Charlie’s life, especially with Charlie training as a chef, so they chose to make the kitchen one of the major features of the design rather than reducing it to save space. A large opening window connects the kitchen directly to the deck, allowing the indoor and outdoor living areas to work together.
Another major departure from conventional tiny house design is the separate amenities building. The toilet, shower and laundry are located outside the main home, leaving more internal space for the lounge, kitchen and sleeping loft. It is a bold choice, but one that suits the subtropical climate and Elly and Charlie’s desire to spend much of their time outdoors.
The large covered deck extends the home well beyond its walls and provides space for cooking, eating, relaxing and entertaining. Solar power, tank water and productive gardens support their off-grid lifestyle, while the surrounding trees give the property the feeling of a private retreat.
Despite its unconventional design, nothing about this home feels impractical. There is a comfortable lounge, generous storage, a spacious sleeping loft and plenty of room for the family to live without feeling confined. More importantly, the home has given Elly and Charlie greater freedom, less financial pressure and a closer relationship with nature.
This is a tiny house filled with bold ideas, unexpected details and design choices that will not appeal to everyone. That confidence is also what makes it so compelling.
