Small House

Japanese Meets Scandinavian Design In This Stunning Small Home

There’s something incredibly special about seeing what builders create when they finally get the chance to build for themselves. In this beautiful small home, sustainable builders Kellie and Jerrad have brought together years of experience, a love of natural materials and a deep understanding of small space living to create a truly spectacular family home.

At just 58m², this small house is compact, but it feels anything but cramped. With its warm timber interior, clean lines, beautiful connection to the garden and thoughtful Japanese and Scandinavian design influences, this home is a wonderful reminder that great design is not about size. It’s about care, intention and knowing what really matters.

Before building this home, Kellie and Jerrad had already spent years living small. They travelled and worked around Australia in a tiny house while taking on natural building projects, and later lived on site in a shipping container with their two children and two dogs while creating this home. That journey shaped the final design in a big way. Every decision in the house feels practical, personal and beautifully considered.

The home sits on a peaceful block surrounded by gardens, trees and mountain views. From the outside, the long timber form has a simple, elegant presence, with a wraparound deck that helps the house connect beautifully to the outdoors. It’s the kind of small home that instantly feels calm and grounded, perfectly placed within its landscape.

Inside, the home is a celebration of timber. Baltic pine has been used across the floors, walls, ceilings, cabinetry and even the hidden doors, creating a warm and cohesive interior that feels handcrafted and full of soul. The effect is beautifully minimal, with the natural grain of the timber giving the whole space texture, softness and life.

One of the most impressive aspects of this design is how seamlessly everything has been integrated. Cabinetry disappears into the walls, storage is tucked away and even the shower and toilet rooms are hidden behind timber-clad doors. This keeps the interior feeling open, peaceful and uncluttered, while still allowing the home to work beautifully for a family of four.

The kitchen is generous for a small home, with a long timber benchtop, integrated appliances and plenty of storage hidden behind the seamless pine finish. It opens into a cosy lounge area where the family can gather, relax and enjoy the connection to the garden through large windows and doors. The living space is simple, but incredibly warm and inviting.

The two-bedroom layout is also very cleverly planned. The children’s bedroom includes bunks, desks, storage and room to play, while also acting as a passageway through to the parents’ room, removing the need for a wasted hallway. At the end of the home, Kellie and Jerrad’s bedroom includes a king-size bed, under-bed storage, workspace and a small private balcony.

The design draws beautifully from both Japanese and Scandinavian architecture. There’s the warmth and simplicity of Scandinavian design, combined with Japanese-inspired timber detailing, minimalism and a strong relationship to nature. Together, these influences create a home that feels calm, refined and deeply liveable.

What makes this small home so inspiring is that it doesn’t feel like a compromise. It feels like a dream family home, simply made smaller, smarter and more intentional. Kellie and Jerrad have created a place that reflects their values, their skills and the way they want to live as a family.

This is a stunning example of how small home design, natural materials and thoughtful craftsmanship can come together to create something truly special. Proof that a home doesn’t need to be huge to feel generous, beautiful and full of heart.
