Natural Building

Architect’s Healthy Hempcrete Home is a Blueprint for Better Building

Some homes are designed to shelter us from nature. Others are designed to reconnect us with it. This remarkable architect-designed hempcrete home does exactly that, creating a healthy living environment that works in harmony with both the landscape and the people who call it home.

When we first visited Michael and Tiffany eight years ago, they were living in a modest hempcrete cabin that had become an early experiment in natural building and healthy home design. Today, their vision has grown into an inspiring multi-generational homestead, where thoughtful architecture, healthy building principles and regenerative land stewardship all come together.

Perched high on a ridgeline overlooking the property, this compact cabin may be modest in size, but it demonstrates just how powerful good design can be. Every aspect of the home has been carefully considered to maximise comfort, wellbeing and connection with nature.

Built using hempcrete walls and even a hempcrete-insulated floor, the home takes full advantage of one of the world's most exciting natural building materials. Hempcrete is carbon negative, highly breathable, naturally resistant to mould and pests, and helps regulate humidity while creating excellent thermal performance. Combined with passive solar design, recycled timber, low-toxicity finishes and generous natural ventilation, the result is a home that is as healthy for its occupants as it is for the environment.

Inside, exposed hempcrete walls create a rich natural texture that gives the home warmth and character. Reclaimed French oak doors have been transformed into beautiful furniture, while carefully framed views ensure the surrounding landscape remains an integral part of everyday life. Every room reflects Michael's philosophy that architecture should support both physical wellbeing and a deeper connection to nature.

Beyond the home itself, this project represents something even bigger. Michael's long-term vision is to create a thriving multi-generational property where family, healthy homes, regenerative agriculture and thoughtful design exist together in balance. It is an inspiring example of how architecture can help shape not just better buildings, but a richer and more connected way of living.
