Extraordinary Cabin Built From a Puzzle of Old Windows
Tucked away amongst the trees in the beautiful Dutch countryside, this extraordinary cabin is a wonderful celebration of creativity, craftsmanship and the beauty of reclaimed materials.
Built by jazz musician Gerrit, the cabin began with a simple photograph of a home constructed from old windows. Inspired by the unusual design, he began collecting discarded windows from the streets of Amsterdam and second-hand marketplaces, slowly gathering the materials that would eventually become his dream cabin.
Despite having no previous building experience, Gerrit took on the challenge of constructing the home himself, learning new skills along the way. With help from his teenage son, family, friends and neighbours, he transformed his collection of salvaged materials into a truly remarkable space.
The cabin's most striking feature is its spectacular patchwork wall of windows. Each one is different, carefully fitted together to create a beautiful puzzle of glass and timber that fills the home with natural light and frames views of the surrounding countryside. Inside, soaring ceilings, exposed timber beams, eclectic furnishings and a remarkable wood-burning fireplace create a space that feels both grand and wonderfully cosy.
As a musician, Gerrit wanted the cabin to be a place that would inspire creativity. Filled with musical instruments and surrounded by beautiful gardens, the home has become a peaceful sanctuary where he can compose, play music and escape the bustle of city life.
Built on land that once belonged to his father, the cabin also carries a special family connection, with three generations having contributed to the evolving story of the property.
More than just a beautiful building, this cabin is a true labour of love and a wonderful reminder of what can be accomplished with imagination, determination and a willingness to learn. We hope you enjoy the tour of this very special home.
