For Mel, building a tiny home was never just about downsizing. It was about creating security, independence and a place she could truly call her own. After years of renting and feeling increasingly priced out of the conventional housing market, Mel decided to take matters into her own hands. She designed her own tiny house and, with determination, patience and a willingness to learn, set about building it largely herself.

The result is a wonderfully personal home filled with character. Vintage windows, reclaimed materials, upcycled cabinetry, old maps and secondhand treasures have all been woven into the design, giving the tiny house a warmth and individuality that could never have come from building everything new.

The kitchen is made up of collected and repurposed pieces, the sleeping loft feels almost like a cosy treehouse, and the bathroom features an extraordinary antique Japanese spa bath that Mel managed to find secondhand.

Building the tiny house took years, involved plenty of challenges and required her to continually learn new skills, but step by step she created the housing security she had been searching for.
