Off The Grid

Epic Off-The-Grid Container Home In Breathtaking Location!

In this weeks episode we travel to the very southern edge of New Zealand’s North Island to visit an off-the-grid shipping container home which has been transported to an absolutely breathtaking location! This home is completely off-the-grid with astounding views looking over the ocean towards the mountains of the South Island.

One of the major advantages to building a shipping container home is that they can be constructed off site and transported to remote locations. Container homes are especially well suited to high wind zones and difficult building locations and this is a wonderful example of how they can be used to create a wonderful, comfortable home in some truly wild landscape.

Built from a 40ft shipping container with an added 10ft shipping container to create a bedroom area, this home is packed full of brilliant, clever design. To protect the home from the elements during big storms or fires, and to add to the transportability of the home, it has been designed with shutters which can completely close up the house when needed.

The home’s remote location has meant that off-the-grid living is the natural choice and the home is powered by an impressive solar system with ample photovoltaics and lithium ion batteries. A large tank supplies the house with water and a composting toilet is used to minimise water consumption.

For the homes owners, Delia and Brent, this home is all about creating an epic life-style for their retirement. They have plans to travel all over New Zealand, relocating their container home every 5 years to experience the best the country has to offer.
