Family of Four Lives Mortgage-Free in a 20ft Shipping Container Home

What would it really be like for a family of four to live in a 20ft shipping container home?

When we first heard about Ryan and Lorena’s home in Queensland, Australia, that was exactly what we wanted to know. A 20ft container is an incredibly compact space for two adults and two young children, but after spending time with this family, it quickly became clear that their home is only one small part of a much bigger lifestyle.

Ryan and Lorena are no strangers to tiny house living. They previously built and lived in a tiny house on wheels in Tasmania, an experience that gave them the skills and confidence to take on another DIY home. This time, they wanted something simple that would allow them to get established quickly on their beautiful two-acre property, and a shipping container offered the perfect starting point. 

Despite its incredibly small footprint, their off-grid container home feels warm, comfortable and full of character. Thoughtful window placement brings in an abundance of natural light and connects the interior to the surrounding landscape, while beautiful timber, natural materials and handmade details give the home a wonderfully personal feel. Every part of the design has been carefully considered to make family life in such a compact space possible. 

Of course, when your home is only 20ft long, life naturally extends beyond its walls. The family makes wonderful use of the surrounding outdoor areas, including a generous covered deck that becomes an extension of their living space. A nearby shed also plays an important role in daily life, giving the family additional room for work, storage, creativity and the inevitable collection of children’s toys. 

But what makes Ryan and Lorena’s story so special is not simply how they have managed to fit a family into such a tiny home. It is what downsizing has allowed them to change about their lives.

Before making this move, both Ryan and Lorena were working full-time and their daughter was in daycare. By choosing a simpler off-grid lifestyle, reducing their expenses and becoming mortgage-free, they have been able to step away from full-time work and spend far more time together as a family. For them, the real luxury is not having a bigger house. It is having the freedom to be present while their children are young, to watch them grow and to enjoy this stage of life together. 

Their 20ft shipping container home may be incredibly small, but the life they are building around it feels wonderfully expansive. It is a beautiful reminder that downsizing is not simply about having less.
