The Tiny House Library

If you’re looking for some tiny house inspiration, you’ve come to the right place! On this page I have collected some of my absolute favourite tiny house related books. In these pages you’ll find books on design ideas, downsized living concepts and everything that you ever needed to know about tiny house living. This is a page that I will be constantly adding to as new titles become available. The following links on this page are all amazon affiliate links, which means purchasing via the links below helps to keep our website and YouTube channel running!

I’m super excited to announce the release of our own Living Big in a Tiny House book! This title is currently only available in New Zealand, although it is possible to purchase directly from the publisher and select overseas shipping. Unfortunately, shipping from New Zealand is super expensive. We are currently searching for an overseas publisher for an international release. You can also purchase via Amazon, although it’s still a little on the expensive side until we can organise international publication.

Other Great Tiny House Books!

The Small House Book – Jay Shafer

First in the library I have to start with the book from the man who started it all. The one and only Mr. Jay Shafer. The image that sits on the cover of this book was the very first picture of a tiny house that I have ever seen and the words inside serve as true inspiration from a remarkable man. I had the pleasure of meeting Jay at a recent event in Texas and I can say that he is every bit as personable as I had immagined. This is a must have book for any tiny house enthusiast.

The Derek”Deek” Deidricksen Collection

Derek “Deek” Diedricksen is a truly insane man, but it’s the kind of insanity that is easily mistakable for genius. This guy is a true legend in the tiny house world and is responsible for many amazing micro shelters that have been built all over the globe. These books are full of brilliant ideas and inspiration for aspiring tiny house and micro shelter builders!

The Big Tiny – Dee Williams

The Humanure Handbook – Joseph Jenkins

The idea of switching to use of a composting toilet can be daunting but in reality it’s a simple transition which is not only perfectly sanitary but extremely helpful for the environment. Now in its fourth edition, The Humanure Handbook by Joseph Jenkins does an amazing job of dispelling many of the myths surrounding composting toilets while going in-depth into their use and maintenance. For The Kids!

Tiny home’s aren’t just for grown-ups. Children are fascinated with tiny homes and there are some great books on the market which give them some insight into the designing and building process, as well as tiny house philosophy. Here are some we recommend.

The Big Adventures of Tiny House – Susan Schaefer Bernardo

One of the most charming tiny house books that I’ve discovered recently is actually for the kids! This story of a little tiny house discovering it’s place in the world is a perfect bedtime story for the young ones. I was recently involved in a special reading of this book at a Florida tiny house festival and I couldn’t be happier to recommend it here on this list. If you’re looking for a gift for a little person, look no further than Susan Schaefer Bernardo’s wonderful tale.

Puffin the Architect by Kimberly Andrews

We visited the author of this book who lives with her family in a spectacular shipping container home in Wellington. This fantastic book is beautifully illustrated and tells the story of a Puffin Architect who is tasked with the very tricky job of designing a small home for her own children!
