Tiny House

Solo Woman’s Creative Mortgage-Free Tiny Home in a Micro Community

Aynslie’s tiny home is a joyful celebration of creativity, colour and self-belief. Set on a beautiful five-acre property beside the river, this wonderfully unique tiny house forms part of a small micro community where friends share gardens, animals, food, potluck dinners and a more sustainable way of living.

For Aynslie, the journey into tiny house living began when close friends invited her to join them on their land. Their boys had moved out of home, they didn’t want to sell the property, and instead decided to create their own little community. Aynslie had been watching tiny house videos, gathering ideas from expos, and dreaming of what her own small home might one day become. When the opportunity came to build on the land, she took it.

What makes her story especially inspiring is that Aynslie began this build with very little experience. As she jokes, only a few years ago she didn’t know what a hammer was. Over two years, she spent weekends working on the home, learning from talented friends, making mistakes, fixing them, and slowly developing the confidence and practical skills to bring her vision to life.

The result is a magical 9m x 3m tiny home that is completely her own. Every part of the house reflects Aynslie’s personality, from the vibrant blue walls and stained glass windows to the theatre lights, Shakespeare references, recycled timber floors, live-edge benchtops and rooftop wine deck. This is not an off-the-shelf tiny house. It is a home filled with character, humour, clever design and deeply personal details.

Inside, the home is full of smart small-space ideas. The compact kitchen includes an oven, dishwasher, coffee station and a safari window that opens the space beautifully to the outdoors. A hidden spice rack is tucked into a pocket door, the stairs are packed with storage, and the lounge is cleverly split across two levels to create separation and add useful underfloor space.

One of the standout features is the pulley TV, which can be lowered for movie nights and then lifted away to reveal the view again. The lounge also includes a storage couch that converts into a double bed, while a beautiful antique fireplace, believed to date back to around 1916, adds a wonderful sense of history to the space.

Aynslie’s office and library loft sit above the kitchen, giving her a separate place to work from home and store her much-loved books. From there, she can access the rooftop deck, affectionately known as the wine deck, a perfect spot to sit and enjoy the view across the landscape.

The bathroom is another clever design moment. Rather than creating a standard enclosed room, Aynslie has split the bathroom layout to form a corridor through to the bedroom. This allows the toilet and shower area to be closed off while still giving access through the home, with the vanity remaining usable at all times. It’s a smart solution that helps the compact space feel much larger and more functional.

In the bedroom, another stained glass window becomes the hero feature, framed by built-in shelving and book storage. A sliding door connects the room to the outdoors, while a pull-out wardrobe on castors provides hidden hanging space without cluttering the room. Even Aynslie’s cat has been carefully considered, with his own entrance and outdoor enclosure, giving him plenty of space while protecting the native wildlife in the area.

Beyond the home itself, the wider property adds so much to this way of life. Around eight people live across the land in different dwellings, sharing the work of gardens, animals and food production. There are chickens, alpacas, goats, veggie gardens, fruit trees, composting systems and a strong connection to both the land and the surrounding community.

Built for just over AUD $80,000, Aynslie’s tiny home has given her a mortgage-free lifestyle with minimal rent, while allowing her to live in a place that feels deeply connected, creative and resilient. After years of renting, she now has a space that is truly her own, designed around the colours, objects, books, theatre references and lifestyle that matter most to her.

This home is a beautiful reminder that tiny house living doesn’t need to mean stripping life back to plain white walls and empty spaces. A small home can be practical, affordable and cleverly designed, while still being vibrant, expressive and full of personality. Aynslie has created something absolutely magical, a tiny house that feels alive the moment you step inside.
