Family Finds Freedom Off-Grid in the Tasmanian Wilderness
There’s something incredibly powerful about choosing a different path.
For Jackie and Robb, life in Sydney had become a cycle that so many people know all too well. Rising rents, financial pressure, and the feeling that no matter how hard you work, owning a home is always just out of reach. But instead of continuing down that road, they made a bold decision to change everything.
What followed was a journey that led them far from the city, all the way to the Tasmanian wilderness, where they’ve created a completely new life off-grid on their own land.
Set on nearly 20 acres of forest, complete with a flowing stream and even a small waterfall, this is a place that feels a world away from their old life. But what makes this story truly special isn’t just the land or the off-grid lifestyle. It’s the home they’ve created within it.
This tiny house is a reflection of deep thought, creativity, and intention. After living in a previous tiny home, Jackie set out to design something that would truly work for their family. The result is a home filled with clever ideas, from the beautiful split-level roofline and dormer windows that flood the space with light, to the unique central walkway connecting the lofts, complete with a see-through perspex floor that adds both function and a sense of openness.
Every detail has been carefully considered. The warm, nature-inspired colour palette was drawn from the surrounding landscape. The kitchen is designed for real daily use, with full-size appliances and smart storage solutions. A mudroom at the rear of the home takes care of practical needs like laundry and wardrobe space, allowing the main living areas to remain open and uncluttered.
Beyond the tiny house, the property continues to evolve. A separate music studio gives Jackie and Robb space to pursue their careers as professional singers, while their young son Wycliffe grows up surrounded by nature, complete with his own handmade treehouse. Jackie’s mother also lives on the land in a converted bus, creating a unique and supportive multigenerational setup.
Living off-grid here brings a real sense of independence. With solar power, gas, and plans for further self-sufficiency through gardening and a future food forest, they are steadily building a life that is more resilient, more connected to nature, and more in tune with what truly matters.
After a difficult chapter that included a serious car accident and a long recovery, this home represents something much deeper than just a place to live. It’s a fresh start. A sense of freedom. And a life that has been intentionally designed from the ground up.
