Beautiful Tiny House in Eco Community

EarthSong Eco-Neighbourhood has long been at the cutting edge of sustainable design and urban permaculture. It’s for that very reason that it should be no surprise to discover that EarthSong is also now home to one of New Zealand’s first Tiny Houses.

At just over 11 square meters, Connie Kristensen has built her house based on plans from the Tumbleweed Tiny House Company in the US. Jam-packed with very clever design elements, the house has been masterfully constructed with great attention to detail. The workmanship in this home truly is exceptional. The house was constructed over a period of 10 months, and last week moved to it’s new home-pad at the EarthSong community.

Tiny Houses are perfectly suited to community living. They are small; yet provide more than enough personal space. Living in community has some huge benefits for Tiny House owners too. For example, in this case, shared common room facilities for entertaining larger groups of people, access to permaculture gardens, organic food and even a central composting toilet facility.

Connie’s beautiful Tiny House is a lovely piece of design, and the relationship with EarthSong provides a possible future model for Tiny House living in New Zealand.

Do you know where Connie’s table came from? I am building my own home now (in San Diego, California) with a similar porch and want to order that table! Your videos are lovely, thanks for all the great information!

    • Bryce

Hey Danielle. Her table was actually built by her builder. All of the furniture in her house is custom built. 🙂

    Hi Bryce,
You mentioned that “the cost of a tiny house can quickly escalate when you are paying builders and tradesmen”. I have 2 questions around this the first being by how much would you est. the cost can escalate and secondly do you or know of any tiny house builders, or potential builders open to tiny house building in the Wellington area?

    Many thanks,

    • Bryce

Hey Delia. That’s a really difficult question to answer as there are so many factors that would go into it. These vary between things such as the complexity of your build, the skill of the labours you choose, the times that you are wanting to build. The best thing to do would be to ask around and get some quotes for your project. Unfortunately I have no knowledge of tiny house builders in Wellington. If I were you I would just make some calls to some builders. 🙂

Hi Delia, what is your number. I would be interested in talking to you about your project.

    Hello Bryce,
I am fascinated about the idea of building my own tiny house. Do you know where I can get some ideas for different designs from so that I can choose which one suits me best?

Also, is there also a DIY set available that can be bought? And what does it cost? Or do you even sell a tiny house already build?

Another question is do you know how much the trailer cost to built with a size of 7.0m long and 2.4 m wide?

    Thanks bryce.

    • Bryce

      Hey Claudia!

Thanks for getting in touch. As our build progresses, we will be putting a lot more information about our build, and eventually the plans for our design will be available through this website. In the mean time, a great resource for plans is Tiny House Design.

To get things kicked off, the best person to talk to about a tiny house trailer would be Ian from Monoway. Drop them a line!

I want to build a tiny house with kitchen and toilet on a trailer. Do I need a building consent? Can I connect the sewage pipe of tiny house to the main house?

    • Bryce

If you are wanting to connect your tiny house to the sewage system etc, then you will need to apply for resource consent.

I like it…i would make the door squared from the structure itself..make a little spacious inside..otherwise looks good!

    • Bryce

I agree. Although, I have to admit that I do like the way that it creates a mini porch. A porch area is often overlooked in Tiny House design. It’s nice to have a small area to pull of your shoes, or fumble around for your keys without getting wet.

Well done Connie on creating such a beautiful home in a beautiful setting. Love all the little details throughout and it’s great to see a cork floor – I plan to use cork as well. Thanks for sharing your home and to Bryce and Mel for another great video.

    • Bryce

Thanks Julia. Yes, Cork is a great option for Tiny House flooring. It’s not only lightweight, but also very warm.

    nice ♥ i love it >> thanks

  8. Larissa

Gorgeous design, unsure if there’s any shower/toilet behind the staircase cubboard on the otherside of the kitchen. But it’s a lovely spacious design. Does this plan (or their version) of this tiny house come with any approximate price indication? I’m thinking of a tiny house at some point and trying to see the price averages of all tiny houses so I know what I’m getting myself into. 🙂

    • Larissa

Me again, sorry I haven’t watched the video YET and maybe I should. 😉 Just overlooked the pictures, thanks!

    • Bryce

Hi Larissa. Yes, the house does have a shower and toilet, although this part is still under construction. DIY Tiny House builds in New Zealand seem to be coming out at around 20 – 30 thousand dollars, depending on the fittings etc. These costs can quickly escalate though when you are paying builders and tradesmen. We will be filming our entire build process, and keeping a list of suppliers and material costs on our website to make it simple for people who want to follow our build.

  9. bonny

where can I get the designs for this? it will be the answer to all my prayers.

    • Bryce

Hi Bonny. I believe this house is built from plans by the Tumbleweed Tiny House Company. The model of the house is the ‘Fencl’.
