Johann Bernhardt is the director of Bernhardt Architecture Ltd. He lectures on sustainable design and building at the University of Auckland, runs the Auckland office of the Building Biology and Ecology Institute and is the author of the book ‘A Deeper Shade of Green – Sustainable Urban Development, Building and Architecture in New Zealand’.

Johann leads our Tiny House design team, and in this video talks about minimalism, the Tiny House movement, why it appeals to him, and why the Tiny Houses may represent a valid solution for the future of building in New Zealand.

Experimenting With Space

Posted on by Bryce Posted in Architecture, Tiny House |

When designing a Tiny House, space is everything and the limited amount of area we have to work in means that we have to be careful about each decision we make.

It’s one thing to draw ideas down on paper, but it’s even better to be able to walk through and experience that space for yourself! Thankfully, with such a small house, that’s easy to do.

Our Tiny House Design Objectives!

Posted on by Bryce Posted in Architecture, Tiny House |

The first of our weekly update videos! In this episode we talk about the design objectives for our Tiny House and see some of the discussions with our design team about possible features and technologies that may be used.

It may seem simple to design a tiny house, but in actual fact, because the space is so small, a lot more thought has to go into the design, and attention must be paid to every detail.

The Journey Begins!

Does living in a Tiny House help make room for a bigger life? Join us on our journey to find out!

Together with a talented architectural team, we are pushing tiny house design in New Zealand to the next level.

The project will not just follow us through the whole design and build process, but also the first six months of living in our new tiny house.

It will also follow the whole process of living a downsized, eco friendly life.

Design Underway

Posted on by Bryce Posted in Architecture, Tiny House News |

A

The design of the tiny house is now underway! Under the supervision of Johann Bernhardt, a team of three brilliant sustainable architecture students is taking a fresh look at Tiny Houses.

Now, the Tiny House isn’t a new concept, and we are not completely re-inventing the wheel here. If it’s not broken, don’t fix it, however, New Zealand’s unique conditions mean there are many changes that need to be incorporated into the design. There are also lots of ways that current designs can be improved. This is also an opportunity to really push the boundary in terms of environmentally sustainable design, and we aim to incorporate as many eco friendly products as possible.

Many of the systems that the house will use are being specially designed for the project, so get ready to see some great kiwi innovation! Lots more to come soon. 🙂
