DIY Cottage Style Tiny House – Revisited!

It’s been a year since we last caught up with Shaye and Tom in their tiny house and since that time a lot has changed! Their tiny abode has transformed into a wonderful home for their growing family, which now includes newborn daughter Hazel.

Cottage Style Tiny House

The new porch area makes a wonderful addition to their home, helping to create more indoor-outdoor flow and providing a bit of added protection from the elements.

Tiny House Kitchen & Office

Inside, the Tiny House is looking wonderful. After a year, the house has been well lived in. Little improvements and finishing touches have been added everywhere.  The addition of an office area gives Shaye and Tom a functional space at home to manage their business.

Tiny House Kitchen

The kitchen has become a wonderfully functional space where the couple love to cook. Shaye and Tom regularly prepare meals for large groups of people and the clever lay-out of the kitchen makes cooking a pleasure.

Tiny House Kitchen

Since our last visit, the kitchen has been finished with the addition of a designer gas stovetop. A beautiful back-splash has also been created using left over tiles from their bathroom floor.

Tiny House Living Room

The living room has now been decorated and has become a fantastic space for relaxing and also entertaining friends and family. The very open plan of this house helps to make this a brilliant space for conversation and entertaining.

Tiny House Storage Couch

The now finished couch area is beautiful, comfortable, functional and also packs a huge amount of storage space into the house thanks to the opening draws.

Tiny House French Doors

The french doors of the Tiny House help to open the house to the magical surrounding gardens. Above, the storage loft is providing valuable space for objects that may otherwise be awkward to find a home for.

Tiny House Bathroom

The charming tiny bathroom boasts a full size shower, and simple humanure composting toilet. One year on, the couple have gone through the learning curve of finding the best cover materials for their toilet and it is completely free of any bad odour.

Tiny House Gardens

Outside the area surrounding the Tiny House has been transformed into spectacular gardens boasting all kinds of edibles. The garden is watered via a swale (a low tract of land that has been designed to manage the flow of water) which is fed by the grey-water from the house. Shaye and Tom are very careful to only use non-toxic, eco-friendly products in their home, as anything that goes down the sink ends up in their food!

Tiny House Family

Now with a new-born daughter, the couple are enjoying Tiny House life as a family more than ever. Many people would be frightened at the idea of living in such close quarters with a new-born baby, but Shaye and Tom have completely the opposite reaction. For them, the Tiny House brings them closer together and allows them all to share each special moment as a family.

If you would like to find out more about Shaye and Tom’s Tiny House design, or if you would like to purchase plans to their house, you can do so on their website.

Beautiful AND perfect! I apologize if this answer is in this article somewhere, but could you tell me the square foot (or Length and Width) of this tiny house? Thank you!

    • Barbra

About the time I wrote this, I found the size (23′-7″ x 7′-10″)on their website. Thanks!

  2. Alexandra

Your house is beautiful. I would like to ask how many squared meters does it have. Also, how do you wash your clothes considering that you have a small baby? Do you have a washing machine? Thank you!

  3. Julie

I am going to build one very similar to Shaye and Tom’s with my son who is a builder in Queenstown nz. How long is Shaye and Tom’s Trailer? and is it 2.5 wide? I will keep in touch. Thank you for showing us the way to be mortgage free.

  4. Bre

I’m 17 and I’m trying to plan some of my future out an I understanding building my tiny house will have no mortgage. I live in Montana so all I have to do is buy land and have my tiny house on there. Do I have to pay someone to connect me running water and adding pluming to this designe will add width to the house or nah.

Hi, Do they own their own land? I would love to build a tiny house, but in NZ how do you find land to put it on?

    • Bryce

Yes, Shaye and Tom do own their own land, but the majority of Tiny House owners in NZ rent land to put their tiny houses on. We will be covering a video topic in the future that looks at the different land arrangements that tiny house owners in NZ have.

This tiny home feels like heaven! Just watching the pictures relaxed me and took tons of stress away from my system! The fact that they are raising a baby there gives me hope it is perfectly attainable to have a tiny family!…trying to convince my husband! Many blessings to your family from Argentina.

  7. Hannah

Sorry if someone has already raised this or if it has been shown, but I missed it – do they have table, dining table or such like within the couch area. Real inspiration though, thank you for sharing.

What a lovely young family! But what about when Baby Hazel starts climbing those stairs? She is going to demo the pantry with all those jars and things in easy reach. All babies are curious and like touching. Will they put a door on the pantry? And a railing on the stairs? Also what happens when Hazel becomes a bigger child? What privacy will Mom & Dad have? Hope you do a follow up episode that answers those real life questions!

So where is this home located? It doesn’t seem like they are living in the States? I love the layout of the land and that garden is amazing for a first year!

    • Bryce

Nope, they are living in New Zealand. So far all of the places we have visited are in NZ, although we look forward to our first overseas Tiny House tours! 🙂

Hi, great to see Shaye and Tom’s lovely lifestyle. Lucy looks beautiful with her lovely interior design touches. Just wondering about what they do for laundry? Thanks.

  11. Nerida

Well done. Looks like a young couple with their heads firmly screwed on. It looks like a great set up as well and fabulous step toward independent living with minimal impact on the plant. Again well done and best wishes for a happy and successful life together.

Paradise! Absolute paradise. I will share the video with my wife who is still not sold on tiny living. Maybe this will change her mind.

    • Bryce

They really have created a magical space! Best of luck convincing your wife. 🙂

  13. Donna

Wonderful update, thanks so much for sharing. I wish so much that I could visit NZ one day to see just what is going on down there. You all seem to be far ahead of us in the US as far as off grid and innovations.

  14. Mike

Sweet video! Great to see so much progress. Well done all.

  15. Lisa Currie-Gurney

so great that you have gone back and shared the progress of this sweet couple.

    Learned a few things, I didn’t know.

Oh, what was the other building that was having work done on it?

    Is their website posted?

    Thank you!

Thank-you so much for taking the time to share these stories. This home is my all-time favourite; elegant, gracious and functional and so liveable as evidenced by the new addition. I am constantly checking out new designs and youtube clips, and have yet to find a tiny home that is the equal of this.
Shaye and Tom, you have created a masterpiece.

    • Ionut

I agree this is one of the best tiny houses I’ve seen so far and it has an amazing interior.
I would do one change to it though that would fix the problem they have with the loft space and that would be to change the design of the roof. Not all of it, just on the top of the loft, from a gable design to a shed design like Brett Sutherland did on his tiny house.
With that I think it would be perfect.

  17. Tams

Thanks so much for coming back for that second look. I have been a bit of a tiny house addict this last year, but this home has stayed one of my favourites. My partner and I both have a lot of hobbies so I am still thinking hard about storage, but its great to see it really working for a family 🙂

  18. Andrew

Cool video Bryce. Good to see the place down the track. Seem like a really nice couple too. Hopefully, you’ve got another vid planned on their mud house? What’s the story with that? Are they going move to the mud house and rent out the other? So many questions. Enjoying your series.

    • Bryce

Hey Andrew! Glad you enjoyed the vid! Yup, we will be going back to film a video on the mud house when it’s finished. They are actually planning on building a larger straw bale house for their growing family and will have some POOSHers (like a WOOFer, but for earth building) staying with them, so they are building a smaller earth cottage for them to stay in.

  19. vicki

Fantastic story Bryce, everything you want to know about living small is in this video. Well done.
