Tiny house villages could be the next big trend in housing, that’s according to a recent study by researchers at Kansas State University.

Surveys conducted in 2015  by the National Association of Realtors showed that only one percent of home buyers wanted to live in a tiny home, however the Kansas State researchers believe that this is about to change.

“We think [living in a tiny village] does a few things for one’s health, including creating a better sense of community, satisfying peoples basic needs for relationships, offering affordable housing options, and encouraging physical activity through community gardens and walking to urban establishments.” – Brandon Irwin, Kansas State Researcher.

Tiny House Trailer Build Update: Galvanizing

Posted on by Bryce Posted in Tiny House, Tiny House News | Leave a comment

Steel is used in the construction of our Tiny House trailer due to its inherent strength, however as a metal it is susceptible to rust when left unprotected in the elements. Naturally, as the trailer is the foundation of a Tiny House, it’s important that it doesn’t rust out form under you!

Galvanizing is a process where a protective zinc coating is added to the steel to prevent rusting. It provides much more protection than simply painting the steel, as it actually bonds to the surface, changing the metallurgy. Perhaps even more importantly, it coats the inside of box sections, meaning that the entire Tiny House trailer is protected, and won’t rust from the inside out.

Unfortunately, we were unable to accompany our Tiny House trailer to Perry Metal Protection in Hamilton (where they have the largest hot-dip tank in the country and the only one that is able to fit our trailer), but the good folks at Perry Metal Protection in Auckland gave us a great tour of their facility and showed us how everything works.

Trying out the SunRocket Solar Kettle

Sun-Rocket

In our Tiny House, we are going to be completely off grid. For that reason, we are especially interested in anything that will help us to save energy and fuel.

We’ve been really interested in solar cooking for a while, and when we stumbled upon the SunRocket Solar Kettle, we were really keen to give it a go.

The good people at Solar Cooking Australia sent us one to try out, and this is what happened.
